Like many of the towns surrounding Rome, Alatri in the province of Frosinone in the southern part of the region of Lazio, has known its up and downs. it is one of the bigger cities of the area and there were already settlements as early as the second milennium BC.

A brief history of Alatri
In 306 BC Alatri was subjected to Rome. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire the city was left to decay and, although later a monastic community was established there, it was sacked and destroyed by the troops of Totila.
In the 12th century Alatri regained importance when the Popes used it as a stronghold against Rome and it even was a free commune for a couple of centuries before becoming a papal suzerainty in the 15th century.
In 1870 it became part of a newly created Italy. During World War II Alatri suffered many losses and part of the city was destroyed.
Nowadays the city is an important tourist destination thanks to its Roman and medieval monuments.
Alatri Tourist Attractions
The main tourist attractions of Alatri are its unique city wall and its7th century BC acropolis. The Cathedral can be reached by going through one of the gates of this acropolis. The Palazzo Gottifredo is the seat of the Civic Museum.
