Castel San Pietro is an old castle in Verona. It is nowhere near as famous, or beautiful, as the Castelvecchio, but what it does offer is a gorgeous view over the city and the ruins of the Roman Theatre.

A brief history of the Castel San Pietro in Verona

The Castel San Pietro was built toward the end of the 14th century, while the Visconti dominated the city. In 1450 it was incorporated into the city walls.

The spot must have been inhabited much earlier, since objects from the iron age were excavated at the site. The Romans had also built a fortress here, in order to defend the Ponte di Pietra.

In 1801 troops started dismantling the castle. The Austrians completed this work in 1854, in order to turn the site into an army barracks.

Some parts of the ancient castle and of the medieval walls can still be seen. Though the castle itself badly preserved, the view over the city makes the uphill trip (there is also a funiculare, though) worth your while.
