The Castello Malaspina is located on a hilltop overlooking the city of Massa itself, the countryside and even the coastline. It owes its name to the family who had it constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries. Part of the castle is now being used as a museum.

History and description

The Castello Malaspina or Rocca Malaspina was built by the Malaspina family. For its construction, an already existing medieval fortress was used.
The first nucleus of this fortress dates back to the 11th century, the oldest part being the mastio (“keep”), which was partly dug out into the rock.
Before the original castle became property of the Malaspina (1442), it had been destroyed a couple of times, first by Conrad III of Svevia and later by nearby Lucca.
The residence of the family, which is part of the complex, was built during the Renaissance period. The polychrome facade of this mansion is graced by a loggia and by sumptuously decorated windows. It interiors are frescoed.
The courtyard is asymmetrical.
