History and description
The San Nicola Cathedral was built in the 17th century, on the site of a previously exisiting church. This earlier church had been built in 440, and was dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve.
In 1695 there was a major earthquake, which severely damaged Civita, and the San Nicola took over the title of Cathedral from the San Donato Church.
What to see
The main attractions of this church are the Bible of San Bonaventura and the Santo Braccio (“Holy Arm”), a French reliquary from the 15th century. Located in the third chapel on the right, this silver reliquary is shaped like an arm and is said to contain bones and an arm of Saint Bonaventure himself.
The altar is made of a large sarcophagus from the 1st century BC, with reliefs depicting the end of the night and the beginning of the day.
On display is a “Maddalena” painted by Vanni.
