Cathedral Pisa

Pisa‘s most famous church is the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral, located right next to the famous Leaning Tower. Like many other churches in the city, this Duomo also shows the influence of Arabic architecture.

Pisa Cathedral is located in Piazza dei Miracoli, and is one of the city’s most important places of interest. The official name is Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The Duomo was built in the 11th century. The enormous size was supposed to convey how powerful the Maritime Republic of Pisa was in those days.

San Giovanni Baptistery

The Baptistery (officially Battistero di San Giovanni) is the round building in Piazza dei Miracoli. Completed in the 14th century, it is famous for the sculptural decorations made by the Pisani family.

Santa Maria del Carmine Church

The Santa Maria del Carmine Church is located on the square of the same name along the Corso Italia. The church was built in the 14th century, but was completely redesigned two centuries later. A famous altarpiece by Masaccio was split up in different parts, which can now be seen in a number of famous museums.

San Domenico Church

The San Domenico Church dates from the 14th century. Inside the church there are works of art by Giovanni Battista Tempesti. The monastery has been converted into a shop. Many of the works of art that were once in the church were moved to the San Domenico Nuovo Monastery.

The Santa Maria della Spina Church is an exuberantly decorated church along the banks of the river Arno. The small church is a little out of tune with the surrounding palaces, which are sober in both construction and colour.
