History and Description

In 1996, Richard Meier’s design was declared the winner of a competition to build a new church in honor of the Jubilee Year 2000.
Other names by which the church is known are Chiesa del Giubileo, Chiesa del Terzo Millenio and Chiesa delle Tre Vele.
Meier’s project is characterized by three large white concrete “sails,” the tallest of which reaches 40 meters. In his inauguration speech, Meier stated that the sails symbolically led to a new world.
Curiosities
Another of Meier’s projects in Rome is the Museo dell’Ara Pacis.
The church is built so that daylight cannot provide illumination. The only exception is a small window, which illuminates the crucifix above the altar.
