Palazzo ex-Ristorante Ufficiale EUR, Rome

The Palazzo ex-Ristorante Ufficiale dell’Ente EUR in Rome was constructed in 1939, at the same time as the adjacent Palazzo degli Uffici. It is currently the seat of some local government offices and of the bar-ristorante Palombini. The building is located across from the main entrance to the Palazzo della Civilta Italiana.

A brief history of the Palazzo ex-Ristorante Ufficiale in Rome

The building was originally intended to cater for members of the EUR company and foreign representatives for the Universal Exhibition of 1942. The event, because of World War II, never took place, however, and the building ended up being closed.

The palazzo reopened in 1952, in occasion of the Esposizione Internazionale dell’Agricoltura EA 53. Subsequent modifications in the 1960s completely altered its architecture. Elements were added to the facade, and the basin in the patio was removed. A polychrome mosaic by Angelo Canevari that used to adorn the patio was moved to the Palazzo dei Congressi.

What to see in the ex-Ristorante Ufficiale

Franco Gentilini painted the allegorical tempera mural on the ground floor.

Also on the ground floor, there is a marble polychrome inlay by Eugenio Fegarotti. It depicts still lifes and landscapes with Roman architecture, especially from the EUR district itself.

Useful information

The building is located between the Viale della Civilta Italiana and the Via del Turismo. The nearest metro stop is EUR Magliana (line B).
