There was a time Viterbo was known as the “city of 100 fountains.” Although not all of these have survived, there are still quite a few fountains adorning the town’s squares. The older fountains in Viterbo often have flower-shaped water spouts, which can be traced back to the Etruscan origins of the area.
Most beautiful fountains Viterbo
Fontana Grande

The oldest and most famous fountain of Viterbo is the Fontana Grande. This Gothic fountain stands in the middle of the square of the same name and is considered one of the most beautiful fountains in Italy.
Piazza della Rocca Fountain

The Fountain in Piazza della Rocca dates back to the 16th century. It replaced an earlier fountain, however. Its designer was the famous architect Vignola, who took quite some time to complete his creation.
Pianoscarano Fountain

The Pianoscarano Fountain is located in the Piazza Fontana di Piano, the central square of Viterbo. This fountain was once destroyed by order of the Pope, but was soon rebuilt. Once a year, wine instead of water is made to flow from its spouts.
Fountain of the Lions

The Fountain of the Lions is one of the most beautiful of Viterbo. It is located in the Piazza delle Erbe. It dates back to the 17th century and replaced an earlier medieval version. The lion is the symbol of Viterbo.
Piazza della Morte Fountain
The Piazza della Morte Fountain is one of the oldest and most impressive fountains in the city and is decorated with lion heads and large leaves. The original fountain stood here as early as 1206 but was destroyed during a rebellion. It had been reconstructed by the middle of the 13th century.
Piazza San Faustina Fountain
The fountain in Piazza San Faustina is also decorated with lion motifs.
