The history of the museum itself begins in 1925, although the city of Rome had already started to acquire contemporary Roman art in 1883, which was then displayed in the Palazzo Caffarelli.

When the collection became too large, they had to find an alternative space, which was finally found in the Carmelite Monastery in the Via Crispi.

From 1931 the museum was called Galleria Mussolini for a while. During the rest of the 30’s the collection kept growing in size.

At the moment the collection consists of about 3000 works of art, of which 150 are on display in the museum. The period from which these works originate ranges from the 19th to the mid-20th century, so that movements such as realism, symbolism, futurism and the Roman School are all represented.
