History and description

Luca Signorelli, Madonna and Child
“Madonna and Child with Two Saints”, Luca Signorelli.

The Galleria Corsini is Florence‘s most impressive private picture gallery. The museum was founded in 1765 by Prince Don Lorenzo. He called in the help of the painter Hugford for the decoration.

Highlights include five allegorical figures by Filippino Lippi, a “Crucifixion” attributed to Antonella da Messina and a “Madonna” by Botticelli.

By Luca Signorelli there is a “Madonna with Child and Saints Jerome and Bernard of Clairvaux”.

The majority of the paintings on display were made between the 16th and 18th centuries, although some are as old as the 14th century.

Palazzo Corsini

The Palazzo Corsini, one side of which overlooks the river, is built in a U-shape around a courtyard. The English style garden and late baroque building were constructed in the second half of the 17th century. The frescoes adorning the interior were painted between 1692 and 1700.

The roof of the palazzo is decorated with sculptures and terracotta vases, which was unique for Florence at the time.
