History and description

Loggia Pubblica and Teatro Arrigono, San Vito al Tagliamento
Teatro Arrigoni

The Loggia Pubblica is the former seat of the municipal council and court of justice of the city. It is one of the oldest buildings in San Vito. The current appearance of the Loggia is the result of a number of renovations that took place in the 15th and 16th centuries.

There used to be a bell tower next to the Loggia.

The Loggia is characterised by a large space that is open on the Piazza del Popolo side. Around the space are stone benches.

Cattle and vegetable markets were held here, and auctions used to be held at the “Bank of the Jews”.

In the space above the Loggia, the Podestà used to meet. Popular meetings were also held here.

From the 17th century, concerts and other events took place in the Loggia.

After a recent renovation, that restored the original project, the building was renamed Teatro Gian Giacomo Arrigoni.
