Luna Convento Amalfi

The Luna Convento is one of several Amalfi monasteries that have been converted into a hotel. Originally one of the oldest convents of the city, it is now one of the oldest lodgings. The original complex consists of a cloister, a crypt, a chapel and a watchtower.

History and description

The Luna Convento was founded in the 13th century, maybe even by St. Francis of Assisi himself. The complex was turned into a hotel in the beginning of the 19th century. Famous people having stayed at the hotel include the playwrights Tennessee Williams and Henrik Ibsen, the writer Simone de Beauvoir, the actress Ingrid Bergman, Bismarck and the fascist dictator Mussolini.

The 15th century watchtower has been converted. Of the original structure, the Romanesque cloister still exists, just like the frescoed crypt and the Baroque chapel.
