History and description

Like many buildings in Celano, construction of the Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine was commissioned by the Piccolomini family.
Count Innico Piccolomini, who died in 1566, had ordered the construction of a church dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine in his will, and in 1573 his daughter Costanza received papal permission to build the church, together with an attached convent.
The reason that permission had been delayed for such a long time, was the opposition of the friars of the nearby San Francesco Church.
The convent is currently used as private residences, but at some point served as Celano’s town hall. Later it even functioned as a prison.
What to see
The two statues on either side of the entrance gate depict two holy Carmelites.
The interior is characterized by Baroque architecture and a Latin floor plan. There are four side chapels and six altars.
