Modern and Contemporary Art Museum Viareggio

Viareggio‘s GAMC (Modern and Contemporary Art Museum) is a contemporary art space in the center of town. A big part of the collection of this museum is taken up by the local artist Lorenzo Viani. The entire collection consists of more than 3000 works by 20th century European artists.

Opening hours: From 1 September to 14 June from Wednesday to Saturday from 15.30 to 19.30,  Sunday from 9.30 to 13.30 and from 15.30 to 19.30. Closed: Mondays and Tuesdays; 1 January, 25 March (Patron Saint), 1 May, 25 and 26 December. Admission: 8 Euros (65+ 4 Euros; children up to 14 years of age free). Combined ticket GAMC/Galleria d‘Arte Moderna e Contemporanea “Lorenzo Viani” | Villa Paolina Museo Archeologico e dell‘Uomo “Alberto Carlo Blanc” | Museo della Marineria “Alberto Gianni”: 10 Euros (65+: 5 Euros). History and description

The seat of the GAMC is the nineteenth-century Palazzo delle Muse. The exhibition is spread out over 1600 m² of exhibition space and showcases twentieth painting, sculpture and graphics. There is work by over 700 different artists.

Most of the pieces are the result of private donations, but several were acquired by the city itself. Two thirds of the exhibition are made up of works from the Pieraccini Collection.

There are impressionist paintings by famous artists such as Monet and Gauguin and avant-garde pieces by, amongst others, Picasso, Chagall, Mirò and Ernst.

20th century Italian art is also represented, with famous names such as Fattori, De Chirico, Felice Casorati and Ottone Rosai.

Viareggio-born Lorenzo Viani (1882-1936) was an Expressionist painter. The 85 paintings on display in the museum include his most famous work, “Blessing of the Dead of the Sea”. There are also a number of engravings and the only sculpture he made, “The Holy Face and the Crazy Head”.
