History and description
The Municipal Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art was founded in 1962, as a result of the success of the Premio Arezzo, a prestigious painting competition.
In addition to organizing a number of exhibitions, it began collecting what was to develop into a permanent collection of modern Italian (with an emphasis on Tuscan) art.
Until the mid-80s the museum was housed under the name Galleria Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea di Arezzo in the Palazzo Guillichini. In 2003 it moved to the former Hotel Chiavi d’Oro near the San Francesco Church.
