History and description
The Monte Salviano Nature Reserve is named after a medicinal plant (Salvia Officinalis) which, despite the draining of the lake, still thrives in the area. The plant’s medicinal properties were already known to the earliest inhabitants of the Marsica.
A walk starts on the outskirts of the town of Avezzano. One walks towards the Santuario della Madonna di Pietraquaria and from the ridge one is rewarded with a panoramic view of the picturesque plain below.
What to see
Characteristic animal species are mainly the squirrel (the symbol of the reserve) and the buzzard, while the most striking plant species is the Phlomis Fruticosa, with pretty yellow flowers.
A trail through a pine forest leads past 15 shrines depicting the 15 secrets of the faith of the Rosary.
