History and description
The Necropolis of Sutri is located about one kilometer south of the city along the ancient Via Cassia consular road. The monument occupies about 180 meters of the rock face.
The 64 visible tombs have been excavated directly into the rock face. They are located at different levels.
Not all the tombs are the same. Some consist of one room, some of two rooms, and some have an entrance with an arch. Not all tombs have a space for urns or an arcosolium.
Early in the Middle Ages, the necropolis was already looted. In the course of the centuries, the complex was also often rebuilt or transformed. Over the years, the various caves were used as stables and storage facilities by the farmers of the area.
It was probably in use from the 1st to the 3rd or 4th century AD.
