History and description

The church was built between 1576 and 1596 as an oratory for the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament of the nearby Santa Maria in Via Church. In 1681 it was restored by Carlo Rainaldi and in 1727 it was completely reconstructed.
The architect of this reconstruction was Domenico Gregorini, who did have help from Valadier and others.
Rainaldi‘s original facade has been preserved, however.
In the 19th century, when the Via del Tritone was constructed, the building to the right of the church was razed to the ground. Since it was identical to the building to the left of the oratory, the harmony of the whole was violated.
The Oratory dell’Angelo Custode has a single nave.
Incidentally, the name dell’Angelo Custode refers to an earlier church, which was located nearby, but does no longer exist.
