History and description

Ospedaletto Church Venice
Facade Chiesa dell’Ospedaletto

The Santa Maria dei Derelitti Church is associated with the nursing home founded in 1528 by order of Girolamo Miani, which used to house the sick, orphans and pilgrims.

The original design of the church was by Palladio and dates back to 1575.

Construction of the church was paid for with contributions fromaristicratic families.

The striking facade, decorated with niches and statues, was designed by Baldassarre Longhena between 1668 and 1674. This façade was intended as a monument in honor of its patron, Bartolomeo Carnioni and rises quite a bit above the little church itself.

The church consists of a single nave and the ceiling was designed by Giuseppe Cherubini in the early 20th century.

The most important work of art is the “Annunciation” by Jacopo di Palma il Giovane.
