History and description
The Palazzo dello Sport is designed to be perfectly integrated with the surrounding buildings. Its architectural style is called Italian Rationalism, an all-encompassing name including every early 20th century style having its roots in the Futurismo movement
The Palazzo dello Sport hosts several important sports events and concerts and had space for more than 11.000 spectators. Famous artists like the Rolling Stones (1970) and Bruce Springsteen (2006) have performed in the Palazzo and the Roman basketball team Virtus Pallacanestro has its home base here.
The most interesting aspects of the building are its dome, with a 95m diameter, and the statue of a woman with the Olympic flame in front of the entrance.
Initially the building was called PalaEUR, at present the name is PalaLottomatica, Lottomatica being the name of the company that sponsored the reconstructions (overseen by Massimiliano Fuksas) the building underwent in 1999 and in 2003.
