History Pio Monte della Misericordia

The second floor of this octagonal 17th century church houses a small but impressive collection of Renaissance and Baroque art. In addition to Caravaggio’s masterpiece, paintings by Francesco de Mura, Giuseppe de Ribera and Paul van Somer, among others, are on display.

Caravaggio painted the Sette Opere di Misericordia in 1606. In one painting, he succeeded in depicting the seven traditional Catholic acts of mercy (feeding the hungry, quenching the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering strangers, caring for the sick, visiting prisoners, and burying the dead). The canvas is located above the main altar. The Declaratoria del 14 Ottobre 1607 is also on display in the gallery. It is a kind of receipt for the 400 ducats that the church paid Caravaggio for the work.
