Ponte del Duomo Viterbo
History and description
The Ponte del Duomo is made of big blocks of a type of volcanic stone called peperino. These are stacked on top of each other in such a way that no cement was needed to keep the construction upright.
The blocks are the remains of the first, Etruscan version of the bridge.
To the left below the bridge is the Madonna della Carbonara Church. The Carbonare were moats that were constructed in order to protect the Cathedral. In the past, young ladies looking for a husband used to come and bring flowers to this church.
