A brief history of the Porta Cerere in Anagni
The Porta Cerere, which is the main, northern entrance to the city of Anagni, was constructed in the 16th century. It takes its name from the goddess of the harvest. Walking through this gate, you enter the city’s main street, called Strada Vittorio Emanuele.
The gate was first restored in the 16th century. A 19th century reconstruction was designed by Ernesto Martinelli.
What to see

The plaque decorating the top part of the gate quotes verses from Dante’s “Divine Comedy”, in which the poet describes the slap of Anagni. Apparently, although Dante was not very fond of the Pope, he was not too enamored of the slap either.
