The Via Portuense used to lead to the city of Portus and is now the main street of the Porta Portese market.

At the end of the 19th century the Porta Portese lost a great deal of its importance, when the Ripa Grande harbor, Rome‘s main river harbor was closed.

Pope Clemens XI had a huge arsenal built just outside the gate, in 1714.
