History and Description

Before the Porta San Francesco was built there was another city gate, about 400 meters away, called Portella di Panso. In the 14th century, this was demolished and the current gate was erected a lot closer to the basilica.

The gate is characterized by a large round arch. Next to the gate is a crenellated tower. It is part of the approximately five kilometer long defensive wall around the city.

The Porta San Francesco is close to the bus stop for people who need to return to the station.
