History and description

The city walls that used to protect Semproniano were constructed in the 10th century. In the 13th century, the Aldobrandeschi had the walls strengthened, Contemporaneously, they also constructed the castle at the highest point of the town.
In subsequent centuries, repeated sieges caused a lot of damage to the structure. In the 15th century, the government of Siena was forced to reconstruct the defensive works.
The castle started falling apart toward the mid-17th century. The walls remained intact, however. Later, they were often incorporated in private houses.
