History and description

The Fontana dei Tritoni was constructed in the year 1717 according to a project by the architect Carlo Bizzaccheri, a fountain with a star-shaped basin. Two tritons are seated back to back, tails entwined, in its center.

The shape of the star alluded to Pope Clemens XI Albani, whose family’s coat of arms showed an 8-pointed star above three mountains.

Due to its position on top of a hill, it has always been a problem getting enough water to the Fountain of the Tritons.
