The San Nicolò dei Mendicoli Church (also known as San Nicolò dei Mendicanti) is located in the Dorsoduro district of Venice. It is one of the oldest churches in the city.

History and description
The San Nicolò dei Mendicoli Church is named after the district where it is located. Since this used to be one of the poorest neighborhoods of the city, it was nicknamed dei Mendicoli (“of the beggars”).
According to tradition, the first version of the church was built as early as the 7th century. However, the Byzantine-Venetian style that can be seen today is the result of a reconstruction in the 12th century. This is especially evident in the biforas adorning the façade and in the portico, which was reconstructed using the original material.
The interior of the church also still shows some Byzantine influences. This is particularly evident at the cornice of the apse.
