History and Description

The San Girolamo dei Croati Church was probably built in the second half of the 15th century. It belonged to a guesthouse that took in refugees from what used to be Illiria (pretty much across the Adriatic Sea, from the Italian point of view) and Slavonia (now Croatia) and had been donated by Pope Nicolò V to the Brotherhood of the Slavonians.

In 1588, Pope Sixtus V had the church renovated by Martino Longhi il Vecchio.

The facade of the church was likewise done by Martino Longhi. It is made of travertine marble and consists of two parts. The lower level has two niches on either side of the portal.

The interior has a Latin cross as the floor plan and three chapels on either side.

What to see

There is a false dome painted by Andrea Lilio.

A footbridge connects the San Girolamo dei Croati to the adjacent San Rocco Church.
