History and description

San Lazzaro dei Mendicanti Church Venice
Facade

The church is at present part of the Ospedale di Venezia, but started its existence as the Chapel of the Ospizio dei Mendicanti (“Guest House of the Beggars”).

The complex was built by Vincenzo Scamozzi, who worked on it between 1601 and 1631.

He placed the church between two wings of the hospital. The façade was inspired by the theories of Palladio.

The most important work of art is the “Saint Helena with the Cross” painted by Guercino. This is the only painting by the master that can be seen in Venice.

Another highlight is a “Crucifixion” by the hand of Veronese.
