History and description

It is said, but you would have to drink a lot of coffee to verify this, that Rome’s best cappuccino is served in the Caffé Greco in the Via Condotti. It is also said that the best caffé (what non-Italian speakers call “espresso”) of the city can be had in the Sant’Eustachio il Caffé in the Piazza Sant’Eustachio.

The coffee bar opened its doors in 1938 and the present owners have been running it since 1999. The original floors and decorations have never been changed and the coffee is still roasted in the old-fashioned manner.

Except sipping your caffé on the premises you can also buy coffee here, as well as other delicatessen and all kinds of coffee paraphernalia.

The Sant’Eustachio il Caffé is not a real “neighborhood” coffee bar. It only opens its doors at 08.30 AM, which is rather late for a people who enjoy having their caffé and cornetto on the way to work.

The Piazza Sant’Eustachio is located in the heart of Rome, around the corner from the Pantheon.
