History and Description
Il Museo dell’Opera di Santa Chiara is part of the monumental monastic complex of the same name. It is located on the first floor of the famous cloister decorated with majolicas. It is here that the sleeping quarters of the nunnery used to be located.
Although it is a fairly small museum it consists of a number of different sections. The most famous of these is the ruins of a 1st century AD bathing complex.
Also on display are fragments of some frescoes painted by Giotto.
Another highlight is formed by the fine collection of reliquaries.
The Museo dell’Opera di Santa Chiara was founded to illuminate the history of the basilica.
Through the cloister one can visit a room with a nativity scene with figurines from the 17th and 18th centuries.
