History and description

The Santa Maria Assunta Church dates back to the early 16th century, but was almost completely restored in the 18th century. The restorations were necessary because both the structure of the building itself and the wall paintings were in danger of collapsing.
In those days, the Anguillarini, as the families of the town’s original inhabitants called themselves, were still influential. As a result, they demanded a private chapel in the church.
Since the lay fraternities also wanted a larger space for their meetings, the church was considerably enlarged by adding two naves. The work began in 1765 and was only finished about 30 years later.
