History and description

The Santa Maria Maggiore Church is located at the top of the Colle San Pietro. It existed as early as the 9th and was consecrated in the early 13th century.
The facade is characterized by three richly decorated gates, the central one flanked by two columns. The figures of the Apostles Peter and Paul are carved into the doorposts while at the foot of the columns two marble lions stand guard.
The interior of the church is divided into three naves. In the apse there is a 13th century fresco depicting the twelve apostles, while the painting in the presbytery depicts the Last Judgment.
