History and Description
Of the Santa Maria degli Angeli Church there is still a fresco near the main altar. This “Madonna and Child” dates back to the 15th century. The angels and Sant’Anna also depicted were added two centuries later.
Nothing remains of the San Clemente Church, as it was razed to the ground in 1557 to make room for defensive works. These needed to be built because of a conflict between the Pope and the Spanish king.
The Benedictine monks later rebuilt the church before selling it to the Franciscan nuns in 1596. The latter then had the building restored.
