History and Description

Tore Sciri Perugia
Torre Sciri

The Torre degli Sciri was built between the 12th and 13th centuries. It is quite unique since it is one of the few towers in Perugia that was left in its original state instead of being razed to the ground or incorporated into a newer building.

It is 45 meters tall and well visible from different parts of the city. After it passed from the Oddo family into the hands of the Sciris, its name was changed to the present one.

The reason the Torre Sciri is popularly called Torre degli Scalzi is that it is situated near the Santa Teresa degli Scalzi church.

At the bottom of the tower is an image of a rooster’s leg, the Sciri’s coat of arms.
