The largest and most famous square in Assisi is the central Piazza del Comune, where the city’s main civic buildings are located. Other squares worth visiting are the two squares near St. Francis Basilica and Piazza del Vescovado.
Piazza del Comune
The Piazza del Comune is the square where the Town Hall (in the Palazzo dei Priori) of Assisi is located. In addition to this town hall, there are a number of interesting buildings, such as the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and the 13th century Torre del Popolo.
The Piazza Superiore is the square you end up in when walking down the Via San Francesco or Via Cardinale Merry del Val, on the way to the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. It is a lovely oasis of calm between the city and the church itself.
The Piazza Inferiore of is a rectangular square with colonnades on its long sides. It is a lovely place to sit quietly on a bench and admire the various bas-reliefs on display.
Piazza del Vescovado
The main attractions in the Piazza del Vescovado are the Santa Maria Maggiore Church and the Episcopal Palace. It was an important square in the life of St. Francis. It is here that the saint gave up his earthly possessions and it is also where he allowed himself to be taken shortly before his death.
