History and description

Stazione Marittima Salerno
Stazione Marittima

The construction of the Stazione Marittima is part of a larger urban development along the seafront, with the creation of the Piazza della Libertà, the Crescent and the Lungomare. It is the departure point for the ferries to the islands in the Gulf of Naples and for cruise ships. (Most of the ships that travel along the Amalfi Coast dock at the other harbor, called Porto Turistico.)

For its construction, innovative techniques and sustainable materials were used, in order to reduce the environmental impact and ensure energy efficiency. The building won the RIBA Award for International Excellence in 2017 as one of the best works of architecture built in the world in recent years. The RIBA Award is given annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects to the best projects built in the United Kingdom or by British architects abroad.

The Stazione Marittima has a surface area of about 4,500 square meters. It has three floors, a length of 97 and a maximum height of 13,5 meters. It can hold up to 2,000 people.

What to see

The oyster-shaped Stazione Marittima has an outer shell of steel and glass and an inner core of colored ceramic. The ceramic, which reflects sunlight and creates color effects, is meant as a tribute to the local industry. The architect herself has stated that she got her inspiration from the waves of the sea and from oyster shells.
