History and description

“The Little Temple of Saint Red Emidio” was built in 1633 outside the then city walls of Ascoli Piceno.
The commissioner was Bishop Sigismondo Donati and the architect Fulgenzio Morelli. Sant’Emidio is the patron saint of the city. The little temple is red on both the inside and the outside, in memory of the blood shed by the saint.
Inside the church is the stone on which he is said to have been beheaded on August 5, 309, by order of Emperor Diocletian.
Before the temple was built, there was a small aedicola called the Cona (another word for edicola) di Santo Migno. The temple is octagonal and has a foundation of travertine marble.
