History and description
The Tempio della Tosse is located in a secluded spot surrounded by vineyards outside the center of Tivoli. Since the monument was never completed, its designation as a temple is not certain. Other theories claim that the building may have been the atrium of an ultimately unfinished villa or a cemetery of the Tuscia family.
A final hypothesis, that it may have been a nymphaeum, has been rejected because there were no water pipes leading to the building.
In the 10th century, the monument was converted into a church and dedicated to Santa Maria di Porta Scura. To accomplish this, building material from the nearby Santuario di Ercole Vincitore was used.
