Tor Caldara Nature Reserve description

Also called Tor di Caldano or Tor delle Caldane, the Riserva Naturale di Tor Caldara is one of the few remaining forests from the time when the entire region of Lazio was covered with woods.

The vast majority of the trees there are cork oaks, tree heather and strawberry trees. There are also examples of alders, ratchet poplars and oak trees.

As for the animals, there is a wide variety. In addition to the 50 species of mammals, there are reptiles, amphibians and, of course, many species of birds. There are also very many turtles, which allow themselves to be touched.

The grounds contain several sulfur springs, which is due to the originally volcanic nature of the area.

The nature reserve has existed since 1988 and covers an area of 43 hectares.

What to see in Tor Caldara

There are several ruins dating back to Roman times.

The large round watchtower dates back to the 16th century and was intended to keep an eye out for Saracen pirates raiding the town.
