The Torre dei Lamberti in Verona is also known as the Torre del Comune. It is located between the two main squares Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori. With a height of 84 meters, it is the tallest building of the city.

A brief history of the Torre dei Lamberti in Verona

The 84 meter tall Torre dei Lamberti separates the Piazza della Signoria and the Piazza delle Erbe. Its construction started in 1172. In 1403 it was struck by lightning and the top floors were destroyed. Since it had to be restored anyway, the city decided to add a couple of floors. The reconstruction lasted from 1448 till 1464.

Since the bottom 37 meters, alternating tuff stone with brick layers, is different from the upper half, it is easy to see how tall the original tower used to be. During the reconstruction, the tower was incorporated in the Palazzo del Consiglio.

Bells in the Torre dei Lamberti

The tower used to have only two bells. The smaller one (called Marangona) was used when there was a fire. The bigger one, called Rengo, was used to assemble the city council and also when the city was about to be attacked. The two smaller ones were added toward the end of the 18th century. They are called the Campana delle Ore (“Bell of the Hours”) and La Rabbiosa “The Angry One”. respectively.

In 1795, the clock of the nearby Torre del Gardello stopped working. A new clock was needed, but it was installed on the Torre dei Lamberti, instead of in its original location.

Monday to friday from 10:00 till 18:0o. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 till 19:00. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing time.

  • Ages 60+, ages 8-14, students ages 14-30: 4,50 Euros.
  • School groups: 1 Euro p.p.
  • Ages 0-7, teachers accompanying school groups, disabled people + assistant, Verona card holder: Free. (If the Verona Card holder uses the lift, instead of climbing the steps: 1 Euro.)
