There are two railway companies in Italy, Trenitalia and Italo. The official Trenitalia website supplies information about train rates, timetables and reservations. Italo only travels between the big cities. When Italo started out they often had good deals, but nowadays there is not much difference between the two companies. Italo trains tend to be slightly more comfortable though.
Railway stations Rome
Roma Termini
There are several railway stations in Rome, of which Roma Termini is the most central and important one. Here the daytime EuroStar and Intercity trains arrive and also the non-stop Leonardo Express, which connects the city center to the airport of Fiumicino, arrives and leaves from Termini. The private bus companies connecting Rome to the airport of Ciampino also depart from Termini.
From Fiumicino
The non-stop Leonardo Express arrives at track 23 or 24 of the main railway station Termini, which are the platforms closest to the Via Giolitti side of the station.
There are also cheaper trains from Fiumicino to the city. These are a lot slower, however, and do no go to Termini, but to smaller stations such as Tiburtina, Tuscolana, Trastevere and Ostiense.
The main taxi stand is in front of Roma Termini. When you exit from the tracks you go to the central part of the main hallway, from where you can enter another hallway. You will see the main bus square and the taxi stand in front of you.
There is a tourist information office in the hallway that runs between track 24 and the Via Giolitti. The main car rental companies can also be found in this hallway.
Roma Tiburtina
Rome’s second biggest station is called Tiburtina. The night trains arrive in Tiburtina and several inter-local bus companies as well as the international budget coach company Flixbus have their offices there. Tiburtina is 4 stops from Termini on line B of the underground.
Other railway stations in Rome are a.o. Ostiense, Tuscolana, Trastevere and San Pietro. Many so-called interregionale trains and a number of local trains stop here.
Within Rome the normal public transportation tickets can be used. For destinations outside Rome tickets can be bought from vending machines and the ticket offices at the railway stations themselves. Tickets for the Leonardo Express can also be purchased from newspaper stands.
