History and description
The theater is named after Ventidio Basso, an army leader from Ascoli Piceno in Roman times. The first performances in the theater took place in 1846, although its construction was far from being completed at the time. (Work on the facade would not even begin until 1851).
The original project was designed by Ireneo Aleandri, although several other architects made changes later.
The theater has a capacity of about 1,000 visitors. The gilded decorative plasterwork was designed by Carducci, while Giorgio and Emidio Paci executed it. The frescoes on the vault were painted by Ferdinando Cicconi.
Since 1932 the theater has been owned by the city of Ascoli Piceno. Between 1979 and 1994 it was closed due to restoration work.
