History and Description

The Archaeological Park of Anzio stretches along the Via Fanciulla d’Anzio and includes a number of important archaeological ruins,of which the Villa Imperiale (“Imperial Villa”) is the most important one.

In addition to the Villa, other attractions include a library graced with murals.

The Villa has had a number of different owners from the 2nd century B.C. onward. It was Augustus who set the tone, as the Villa was imperial property and thus automatically passed into the hands of his successors.

The greatest changes were made by Emperor Nero, who found the villa too small for his own grandeur and had the monument embellished and enlarged.

The excavations can only be visited with a guide.
