History and description
The “Fountain of the Beautiful Flora” was placed in the Piazza San Nicola in 1886, as an inscription on the base of the statue indicates.
The bottom part of the fountain is characterized by water spout shaped like lion heads.
The statue was designed by French sculptor Mathurin Moreau and it was also fabricated by a French foundry. Moreau based his design on the “Flora Farnese” in the Naples Archaeological Museum. This statue is itself a 2nd century Roman copy of a Greek original.
