The Central Market (Mercato Centrale) is a huge building on the Scala Saffi, along Livorno‘s main canal, the Fosso Reale. It is also known as Mercato delle Vettovaglie.

History Central Market Livorno
The building, which is a short walk from the Piazza Cavour, was constructed towards the end of the 19th century. The architect was Angiolo Badoloni and it was inspired by the Parisian architecture of the period.
The Central Market has five entrances to the main hall. Next to it are two separate areas where fish, and fruit and vegetables are sold respectively. In the central hall all kinds of other food is being sold sold.

In the street next to the Central Market, Via Buontalenti, there is a large clothing market every day and a bit further on there is a large open-air market where only fruit and vegetables are sold (Piazza Cavallotti).
