The Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga is located about 20 kilometers northeast of L’Aquila. Most of it is in the Abruzzo region, but it extends into Lazio and Le Marche. With a surface area of 1,500 square kilometers, it is one of the largest nature reserves in Italy.

To reach the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso, take the bus from L’Aquila to Piazza Santa Maria Paganica and then the M6 bus to Ponte Cerreto.
History and description

The Gran Sasso natural park is characterized by a rugged rocky landscape bisected by Europe’s southernmost glacier, the Calderone. A number of rare animal species such as the wolf, falcon and eagle have a natural home in the park.
For those who enjoy skiing, there is the Campo Imperatore ski slope.
