History and description

The Porta Napoletana was built between 1666 and 1673 by Carlo Fontana. He created a large gate with a tower and a balustrade.

Underneath the gate parts of the ancient Roman pavement are still visible. This was a stretch of the Via Sacra, which used to lead to a Temple of Jupiter at the Monte Cavo.

The coat of arms of the Chigi family was added in 1673.

Like at the Porta Romana, there is a Madonnella next to the gate.
