A brief history of Prossedi
Already in Roman times, there were settlements on the territory of the town. The current Prossedi, however, was probably founded in the 11th century by inhabitants of Priverno who were fleeing the Saracens.
In 1125, it was set on fire by the troops of Pope Honorius II, to punish the rebelling aristocracy from southern Lazio. Subsequent devastation was caused by the imperial troops of Frederick I Barbarossa and, in 1165, by the Norman King William I of Sicily.
Prossedi was successively fief of the Counts of Ceccano (12th century), the Annibaldi (1291) and other noble families, including the Chigi, the Massimo, the Altieri and finally, in 1758, Marquis Angelo Gabrielli (1758), the last fiefdom.
The main industry in the town is agriculture, especially the cultivation of grapes and olives.
